Vishu is celebrated in Kerala to mark the beginning of Malayalam New year. This festival is auspiciously celebrated by Hindus in the state of Kerala, adjascent parts of Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
The festival marks the first day of Medam, the ninth month in the solar calendar followed in Kerala.
It therefore always falls in the middle of April in the Gregorian calendar on 14 or 15 April every year. The tradition is that elders set the vishu kani (in Malayalam kani means that which is seen first after waking up),light the oil lamps in early dawn, and lead other members of the family to the kani so that they open their eyes to see the kani, which is considered as highly auspicious.
The day also attracts firework play by children, wearing new clothes (Kodi) and get together for the traditional feast called Sadhya.
Vishu Kaineettam is given by elders to other members of the family. Lord Vishnu and his incarnation Lord Krishna are worshipped on the day of Vishu. It was on this day that Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura and because of this Krishna idols are kept in the Vishu kani. The traditional belief is that one's future is a function of what one experiences, that the new year will be better if one sees auspicious kani on Vishu. Therefore, Malayali's spend the day before preparing a setting, usually a tray, of auspicious items.
People also visit temples like Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple or Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple or Kulathupuzha Sree BaalaShastha Temple to have a 'Vishukkani Kazhcha' (viewing) in the early hours of the day.
The Vishukkani setting consists of items such as rice, lemon, cucumber, coconut cut open, jack fruit, Kajal, betel leaves,Arecanut, Aranmula kannadi (Vaalkannadi), Nilavilakku, idol of Vishnu, golden blossoms of the Kani Konna, money ,silver or gold items, cloth (pattu) ,fruits and other harvested products..
Mirror in Vishukani is a symbol of seeing yourself as a part of abundance you see in the form of Kani.
